A Spring Day
A Spring Day
.
I guess when you spend a lot of time in the woods, nature takes on something
of a spiritual tone. To me this picture is the essence of early spring.
Melting snow on the cliffs above is turning into gently flowing water on the
valley floor, with fresh young greenery pushing aside the death of last
season.
I distinguish the quality of a photo by how long it can hold my attention.
This picture is one of those I can view several times and still find new
details. I knew I was going to love this one even before laying in the mud and
hitting the shutter. Shot was made just as the sun was breaking through a hole
in a mostly overcast sky. Despite pushing much of the background out of focus,
there are just so many wonderful things going on here.
The tiny blurred patch of snow at top center can only watch as it succumbs
to springtime warmth.
The Yellow Oak leaf at left hanging on to the log as water flows around it
balances the picture for me. The uneven water surface, and its myriad
reflections of sun, horizon and surrounding vegetation
really make this work for me.
I also love nature's placement of the bright underwater rock in front of
the skunk cabbage. It made a nice light reflector. My favorite thing is the
Red Oak leaf stem sticking up out of the water in front of the green skunk
cabbage. It reminds me of the clenched fist of winter vowing to return one
day as it sinks into the depths during the closing credits of a horror movie.
Oh yeah, how about the tiny fledgling patch of green near middle right edge of the
frame, possibly experiencing sunlight for the first time...very cool!
